Wouldn’t You Love to be First?
August 17, 2009
So many people flee from the idea of standing out in the crowd that they don’t strive for first. For some it is an upbringing that conditioned them to aim for mediocre and for others it is merely a lack of patience. You see most overnight successes took a whole lot of nights.
This week Tiger Woods was defeated in the PGA Championship by Y.E. Yang, a South Korean golfer. This is the first time that Tiger has lost a major when he is leading on Sunday. That is 15 major tournaments in a row where the winning purse would be $1 000 000 at least. Think of the pressure. Think of the concentration and up until this past weekend he has never failed, until now, this would be a first.
But also think of Y.E. Yang, he just moved his family to Dallas Texas. He believed that he could make an impact on North American golf the way he had been doing so in Asia. He is not spring chicken you see, he is 37. He first saw golf instruction as a way to earn a couple of bucks as a 19 year old teenager. But after he realized he could make more money playing himself he was called into Korea’s mandatory military service. This delayed his concentrated investment into the sport until his late 20’s. You see it is a serious long shot for an Asian born golfer to win a Major Golf tournament. It is such a long shot that it has never happened. Y.E. Yang is the first.
What is stopping you from being first? Is it a fake back story that is predicting difficulty rather than success? Is it a negative environment that needs to be infused with people who believe in you and your vision? Is it just the permission that needs to be given to you that yes indeed you can be first.
First to enjoy a successful relationship in your family.
First to earn 100 000, 1 000 000 or 10 000 000 dollars in your family, neighborhood or industry?
First to solve a local, regional, national or global social problem that heretofore has appeared to be unsolvable.
Are you ready and willing to aim for first? If not then what on earth are you aiming at anyways?
Aim A Little Higher. Aim For First.
